How this countdown calculator works

This countdown calculator tells you how many days are left until a date, or how many days have passed since one. Pick a target date, give it an optional name such as “Vacation” or “Wedding,” and press Calculate. You see the number of days left (or days ago), the target date with its day of the week, and the same span broken into weeks and days. A milestone track shows where you are on the way to markers such as 100, 50, 30, 7 and 1 days to go, or for dates in the past, 100, 200, 365, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 days since. Quick buttons fill in popular dates like July 4, Halloween, Christmas and New Year with one tap.

How the days are counted

The tool compares today’s date with your target date using whole calendar days, so the time of day does not matter. Tomorrow is “1 day left,” today is “Today,” and yesterday is “1 day ago.” The count does not include today itself, which matches how most people say it: if a trip starts in 30 days, there are 30 sleeps to go. As an example, from October 3 to December 25 is 83 days. Leap years and varying month lengths are handled for you. For dates in the past, the card also shows how it feels to count the first day as day 1, which is handy for streaks and anniversaries.

Milestones and the progress track

Counting down, the track fills as you pass the markers 100, 50, 30, 7 and 1 days before the date, and when you land exactly on one of them the result shows a “Coming up” badge. Counting up, the markers are 100, 200, 365, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 days after the date, and the badge appears on the exact day you reach one. The 100-day mark after January 1, 2026 is April 11, 2026. A one-line caption tells you how far away the next marker is, so a quick glance answers the question “how long until the next milestone?”

Ideas for what to count down to

  • Holidays and seasons. Christmas, Thanksgiving, the first day of summer or the start of the school year.
  • Trips and events. A flight, a wedding, a concert, a move or a graduation.
  • Deadlines. The tax filing deadline, a project due date, a lease renewal or a visa appointment.
  • Personal goals. A race, a certification exam or the end of a challenge.
  • Counting up. Days since you started a job, quit a habit, moved to a new city or met a friend.

Saving countdown cards

Press Save as card to keep a countdown on this page. Each card is recounted from today every time you open the page, so the number is always current. Cards are sorted with the nearest upcoming date first, then the most recent dates in the past, and each shows a small progress bar. Your cards are stored only in this browser using local storage, so they do not follow you to another device, and clearing your browser data removes them. You can delete any card with the × button.

Sharing your countdown

Copy link creates a web address that contains the name and date, so a friend who opens it sees the same countdown calculated from their own today. Save as image draws a simple card with the name, the days left and the date that you can post or send. Both happen entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Dates people often count down to

  • New Year’s Day is January 1 and Valentine’s Day is February 14.
  • Independence Day is July 4 and Halloween is October 31.
  • Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, which is November 26 in 2026.
  • Christmas is December 25, and many people also count down to the winter break.
  • Tax Day for most federal individual returns is April 15, moving to the next business day when that date falls on a weekend or a holiday.

Use the quick buttons for the dates that come around every year, or type any other date, such as a flight, a due date or the first day at a new job.

Tips for making a countdown useful

A countdown works best when it turns a vague deadline into steps. If the date is 90 days away, divide the time into three 30-day chunks and decide what must be done in each. Look at the number of weekends before the date, which the page shows for upcoming dates, because weekends are often when real progress happens. For personal goals, counting up can be more motivating than counting down: seeing “Today is day 45” of a new habit is a small win you can share with a friend. Save a card for each important date, name it clearly, and let the page recount it every time you visit. If a date moves, simply save a new card and delete the old one so your board always shows what is current.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are there until a date?

Enter the date and press Calculate. The tool counts the whole calendar days from today to that date, not including today. If the date is tomorrow the result is 1 day left.

Does the countdown include today?

No. Today is day zero, so a date that is exactly one week away shows 7 days left. If you prefer to count both ends, add one day to the result.

Can I count the days since a past date?

Yes. Pick a date in the past and the result shows how many days ago it was, the time in weeks and days, and the day number if you count that date as day 1. Milestones at 100, 200, 365, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 days since are highlighted.

Why do I see a different number tomorrow?

The calculator always compares against today’s date on your device, so the count changes by one each day. Saved cards update the same way whenever you open the page.

Are my saved countdowns private?

Yes. They are stored only in your browser and are never sent to a server. They will not appear on another phone or computer, and clearing site data deletes them.

How is this different from the Date Calculator?

The Countdown Calculator is built around a single date and today, with milestones, cards and sharing. The Date Calculator finds the days between any two dates, adds or subtracts days, weeks, months and years, and counts business days.

Does it handle time zones?

It uses the date on your device, so the count rolls over at your local midnight. For an event in another time zone, check the local date there with the Time Zone Converter.
