How this time zone converter works

This time zone converter shows what time it is in one city when it is a given time in another. Choose a base city, enter a date and time (or press Use current time), and choose the city you want to convert to. The result appears instantly with the local time, the date and weekday, a note if the date is the previous or next day, and the time difference in hours and minutes. A swap button flips the two cities and carries the converted time over, so you can answer “and what is that back home?” with one tap. You can copy or share the result as a short line of text for a message or calendar invite.

Daylight saving time is built in

Time differences are not constant. Most of the United States moves its clocks forward one hour on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November, which in 2026 means March 8 and November 1. The United Kingdom and most of Europe change on the last Sundays of March and October instead. As a result, New York and London are normally five hours apart, but only four hours apart for about three weeks in March and again for a week in late October and early November. The converter reads the rules from your browser’s time zone database for the exact date you enter, so it gets those weeks right. When a city observes daylight saving time, a note under the result tells you whether it applies on that date, and reminds you that the difference can shift by an hour with the seasons.

An example

Suppose it is 12:00 noon on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 in New York. In London it is 5:00 PM the same day. In Los Angeles it is 9:00 AM. In Mumbai it is 9:30 PM, because India is 9 hours and 30 minutes ahead of New York in summer. And in Tokyo it is 1:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, so the tag under the result says “Next day.” In midwinter, noon in New York is 5:00 PM in London, 9:00 AM in Los Angeles and 10:30 PM in Mumbai. The tool also shows each city’s offset from UTC, such as UTC−4 or UTC+5:30, which is handy when a colleague quotes time in UTC.

The six U.S. time zones

The U.S. has several standard time zones: Eastern (ET), Central (CT), Mountain (MT), Pacific (PT), Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian. Each is one hour behind the one to its east. The names change with the season: Eastern Standard Time (EST) in winter becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) in summer. If you write “ET,” “CT” or “PT,” the label stays correct all year. Two places are exceptions. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving time, and neither does most of Arizona. That means Phoenix matches Los Angeles in summer but is an hour ahead of it in winter. Both cities are in the list so you can see the effect.

Finding a meeting time that works

Below the result, the meeting table lists common start times in your base city and the matching time in the other city. Times that fall between 9 AM and 6 PM in both places are marked in green as good meeting times. New York and London overlap well in the morning in New York (about 9 AM to 12 noon ET), while Los Angeles and London share only a narrow window early in the Pacific morning. For Tokyo or Sydney, one side will almost always be early morning or late evening. When there is no good time, consider rotating the inconvenient slot between teams, sharing a recording or using a written update.

Tips to avoid scheduling mix-ups

  • Write the zone. Say “10:00 AM PT” or add the city, not just “10 AM.”
  • Be careful with noon and midnight. 12:00 PM is noon and 12:00 AM is midnight. When in doubt, add the date.
  • Check the date, not only the time. Across the Pacific, the calendar date often differs by a day.
  • Check near the clock changes. Around the March and November shifts, test the exact date of the event rather than assuming last month’s difference.
  • Use calendar invites. Modern calendars store events in UTC and show them in each guest’s local time.

UTC, GMT and the time zone database

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world’s reference clock. It never changes for daylight saving time, which makes it the safest way to name a moment across the globe. GMT is the older name for roughly the same time, and the United Kingdom uses GMT in winter and British Summer Time (UTC+1) in summer. Browsers ship with the IANA time zone database, a public list of every region’s past and present rules, and this converter reads from it instead of using fixed offsets. That is why the answer stays correct when a government changes its rules, as long as your browser is up to date.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert time from one time zone to another?

Pick the base city, enter the date and time there, and pick the second city. The tool applies each city’s UTC offset for that exact date, including daylight saving time, and shows the local time in the second city.

Why is the difference between two cities sometimes different?

Because places change their clocks on different dates, and some do not change at all. New York and London, for example, are five hours apart most of the year and four hours apart for a few weeks in spring and autumn. The converter checks the specific date you enter.

What does the day tag under the result mean?

It tells you whether the converted time falls on the same calendar day as the base city, the next day or the previous day. This matters for flights, deadlines and calls across the International Date Line.

Is Arizona on daylight saving time?

Most of Arizona is not. It stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, so Phoenix has the same time as Los Angeles during daylight saving time and the same time as Denver the rest of the year. Hawaii also stays on standard time all year.

Does the tool handle half-hour and unusual offsets?

Yes. India uses UTC+5:30, so a call between New York and Mumbai shows differences like 9 hours 30 minutes in summer or 10 hours 30 minutes in winter. The converter uses whole and partial offsets directly from the time zone database.

What time does it use for “Use current time”?

It reads the current clock from your device and shows it as the local time in the base city you selected. If your device clock is wrong, the result will be too, so make sure automatic time is turned on.

Is my data private?

Yes. The conversion happens in your browser using its built-in time zone information. The cities and times you choose are not uploaded or stored.
