Dog & Cat Age Calculator
Enter your dog’s or cat’s age or birthday to convert it to human years. It uses size- and species-specific formulas instead of a flat ×7.
Small: up to 22 lb (10 kg) · Medium: 22–55 lb (10–25 kg) · Large: over 55 lb (25 kg). Larger dogs age faster.

How to use
How dog and cat years convert to human years
The old rule that one dog year equals seven human years is easy to remember, but it is not accurate. Dogs and cats mature much faster than people in their first two years and then age at a slower, steadier rate. This calculator uses a three-part method. The first year of life counts as 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (so a 2-year-old pet is 24 in human terms), and every year after that adds a fixed amount that depends on the animal: 4 years for small dogs and cats, 5 years for medium dogs and 6 years for large dogs. You can enter an age in years and months or just pick a birthday, and the result appears with a life stage and a comparison chart for every size.
Worked examples
- A 5-year-old medium dog: 15 + 9 + 3 × 5 = 39 human years.
- A 10-year-old large dog: 15 + 9 + 8 × 6 = 72 human years, and already well into the senior stage.
- A 10-year-old small dog: 15 + 9 + 8 × 4 = 56 human years.
- A 10-year-old cat: 15 + 9 + 8 × 4 = 56 human years.
- A 6-month-old puppy or kitten: 0.5 × 15 = 7.5 human years, roughly a young child.
Human years = 15 + 9 + (pet age − 2) × k, where k = 4 (small dog or cat), 5 (medium dog), 6 (large dog)
Why size matters for dogs
Large dogs grow quickly and, on average, die younger than small ones: many giant breeds live 8 to 10 years while small breeds such as dachshunds, Chihuahuas and toy poodles often live 14 to 16. A calculator that treats a Great Dane and a Chihuahua the same would be misleading, so this tool asks for a size category. Small means up to about 22 pounds (10 kg), medium covers 22 to 55 pounds (10 to 25 kg) and large is anything over 55 pounds. Mixed-breed dogs are best judged by their adult weight. If your dog is close to a boundary, check both categories and take the middle.
Life stages
The calculator labels three stages. A pet under one year is juvenile and still growing. Most animals are adults from one year until they reach the senior threshold, which this tool sets at 10 years for cats and small dogs, 8 for medium dogs and 7 for large dogs. Veterinary guidelines use a similar idea: many practices consider cats senior around 10 to 11 years and large-breed dogs senior at about 6 to 7. At the senior stage, vets often recommend wellness exams twice a year, blood work, dental checks and more attention to weight, mobility and appetite.
What science says about the formula
Researchers keep refining how to compare species. A 2020 study from the University of California San Diego compared patterns of DNA methylation, a chemical change that tracks aging, in dogs and humans and proposed that a dog’s human age is about 16 times the natural logarithm of its age in years, plus 31. That curve gives a faster early rise and a slower later rise, much like the 15-and-9 start used here. No single formula fits every animal, because breed, genetics, diet, weight, dental health and medical care all change how a pet ages, so treat any conversion as a guide to life stage rather than a precise number.
Quick conversion chart
These values come from the same formula the calculator uses, rounded to whole years, so you can check an age at a glance.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15 |
| 2 years | 24 | 24 | 24 | 24 |
| 3 years | 28 | 29 | 30 | 28 |
| 5 years | 36 | 39 | 42 | 36 |
| 7 years | 44 | 49 | 54 | 44 |
| 10 years | 56 | 64 | 72 | 56 |
| 12 years | 64 | 74 | 84 | 64 |
| 15 years | 76 | 89 | 102 | 76 |
Cats: indoor, outdoor and lifespan
Cats are simpler than dogs because their adult size varies less. A healthy indoor cat commonly lives 12 to 18 years, and some reach 20, while cats that roam outdoors face more risks such as traffic, fights and disease, and tend to live shorter lives. Veterinary groups describe feline life stages as kitten, young adult, mature adult, senior and end of life, and they recommend regular checkups for kidney function, thyroid health, teeth and weight as cats get older. Cats are good at hiding discomfort, so changes in appetite, litter box habits, grooming and jumping are worth noticing.
Signs your pet is getting older
Common signs include slower movement or stiffness after rest, graying around the muzzle, more sleeping, weight gain or loss, cloudy eyes, hearing loss, bad breath from dental disease and, in some pets, confusion at night or accidents in the house. None of these should be dismissed as simply old age, because many are treatable. A vet can offer pain relief, joint supplements, dental care and diet changes that improve comfort and often extend healthy years.
Care tips by life stage
- Juvenile: complete the vaccine series, start training and socialization early and discuss spay or neuter timing with your vet.
- Adult: keep a yearly wellness exam, maintain a healthy weight, brush teeth and give daily exercise or play. Obesity is one of the most common problems in adult pets in the United States.
- Senior: move to twice-yearly checks, watch for stiffness, weight change, changes in thirst, bad breath and confusion, and ask about joint support and senior diets.
Frequently asked questions
Is one dog year really seven human years?
No. The rule of seven is a rough shortcut. In practice a dog ages about 15 human years in its first year and 9 in the second, then 4 to 6 per year depending on size.
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
About 15, roughly a teenager. A 2-year-old dog is about 24 in human terms.
How do I convert my cat’s age?
Use the same method: 15 for the first year, 24 at two years, and 4 more for each year after that. A 12-year-old cat is about 64 in human years.
Does breed matter besides size?
Yes. Some breeds are prone to earlier health problems, and lifespans vary even within one size class. The calculator groups dogs by weight, which captures most of the effect.
What if I do not know my pet’s exact birthday?
Enter an estimated age in years and months. A vet can estimate the age of a rescue from teeth, coat and eyes, usually within a year or two.
When is a dog or cat considered senior?
This tool uses 10 years for small dogs and cats, 8 for medium dogs and 7 for large dogs. Your vet may suggest earlier senior care for giant breeds.
