How to use this viewing distance calculator

This calculator turns your screen size and resolution into a recommended viewing distance for TV, movie, or desk use, plus the minimum distance at which its pixels stop being visible to the naked eye. The same 55-inch screen calls for a different seat depending on whether it is 1080p or 4K, and whether you want cinema-style immersion or a relaxed living-room view.

Three steps

  1. Enter the diagonal screen size in inches. This is the number in the product name — for example, the 55 in a 55-inch TV.
  2. Pick a resolution and a use case. Choose FHD, QHD, 4K, 8K, ultrawide, or type in a custom resolution, then choose TV & video, movies & gaming, or PC monitor work.

The formula

The recommended distance comes from the horizontal field of view — the angle the screen takes up in your vision. Cinema and broadcast standard SMPTE EG-18 recommends a minimum field of view of about 30 degrees for critical viewing, while home theater certification program THX recommends a wider, more cinematic 36 to 40 degrees. Given the screen's width, distance follows directly from that angle:

Viewing distance = screen width ÷ (2 × tan(field of view ÷ 2))
Minimum clear distance = pixel size ÷ tan(1 arcminute) ≈ pixel size × 3438

For example, a 55-inch 16:9 screen is about 48 inches (121.8 cm) wide. At an immersive 40-degree field of view that works out to about 5.5 ft (167 cm); at a comfortable 30-degree view it is about 7.4 ft (227 cm). On a 4K panel the pixels are small enough that the minimum clear distance is only about 3.6 ft (109 cm), so anywhere in that recommended range is pixel-free. The same 55-inch screen at 1080p (FHD) has a minimum clear distance of about 7.2 ft (218 cm) — sit closer than that and you may start to see the individual pixels.

SMPTE vs. THX: two different goals

SMPTE (the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) and THX approach viewing angle from different directions. SMPTE EG-18 was written for critical, fatigue-free reference viewing in mastering suites and screening rooms, so its 30-degree minimum favors comfort over spectacle. THX, the home theater certification program, recommends 36 to 40 degrees because its target is the immersive, edge-to-edge feeling of a commercial cinema. Neither number is wrong — pick the SMPTE end of the range for long TV-watching sessions and the THX end for movie nights and gaming. How far do Americans actually sit?

Industry viewing surveys commonly put the typical American living-room seating distance somewhere around 8 to 10 feet (240 to 300 cm) from the screen. For context, even a large 65-inch 4K TV has a recommended range that tops out around 8.8 feet, so many U.S. living rooms are seated at or beyond the far edge of the ideal range for a mid-size screen. This is the reasoning behind the common advice to size up: a bigger screen simply matches typical American couch distances better than a smaller one.

4K, 8K, and what more pixels buy you

Resolution only matters if your eye can actually resolve it from where you sit. The ITU-R BT.2246 standard suggests reference viewing distances of about 3.2 times the screen height for 1080p, 1.6 times for 4K, and 0.8 times for 8K — each roughly halving as resolution quadruples. In practice this means an 8K set only pays off if you sit unusually close or buy an unusually large screen. From a typical living-room seat, a 4K panel already exceeds what most people's eyes can resolve, and an 8K upgrade at the same size and distance is effectively invisible.

Gaming monitors: why closer can work

Desk gaming is a different environment from a living-room TV. A monitor is small enough, and close enough, that even a modest screen fills a wide field of view — a 27-inch monitor sitting 24 inches away already exceeds a 40-degree field of view. Competitive players often sit at the near end of a comfortable range for a wider effective field of view and faster peripheral reaction time, but ergonomic guidance still favors keeping the top of the screen near eye level and staying roughly an arm's length back to avoid eye strain during long sessions.

Eye comfort at any distance

Sitting at the right distance does not by itself prevent eye strain during long sessions. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It is a small habit that gives your focusing muscles a break.

Monitor height matters just as much as distance. Keep the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level; if it is too high your neck tilts back, and if it is too low you hunch forward, either of which quickly tires your neck.

Brightness should match the room. A screen that is much brighter or dimmer than your surroundings forces your eyes to work harder adjusting between the two. In the evening, a lower brightness setting or a built-in night mode can reduce eye strain and make it easier to wind down before bed.
